Alder, NYC

February 5, 2013 By lisa in Uncategorized

When we wrote to Wylie Dufresne, asking if he’d have a look at our new book, we thought it would be a longshot. We knew he had young family & a new restaurant opening.  Would you blurb a stranger’s book under those circumstances?  Really?

And yet, he was generous enough to offer his support:

“A fantastic collection that is as much about relationships as it is about the food that bonds us. You will never look at your family dinner in the same way again.” –Wylie Dufresne, owner/chef WD-50 & Alder

Today, Cassoulet contributor, Jeff Gordinier, reviews Dufresne’s new restuarant, Alder in the Times.  There’s not much better than pub grub made better. Except maybe pub grub made better and served in my old old neighborhood.  Now Alder is the first place I plan to eat when we’re back east with the book. If we can get in.

Cooking with Tea

If you haven’t already heard, then let me be the one to tell you: Tea is not just for your afternoon cuppa.

For a recent cocktail party, Tony and I demonstrated a moment of serendipitous marital and culinary harmony when we both reached for the tea leaves. Keeping with our usual kitchen division of labor, I made the salty snack, he made the cocktail. They married beautifully.

Eating Red and Gold

It’s not every year that two of the local teams play for the championship, and although we’re really more of a baseball and basketball family, it’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement about the Forty-Niners.

Naturally, I’m all about the food, and that leads to two questions: How can our meal support our team? And, having read about Lisa’s Super Bowl plans, how, I wonder, can this happen without me spending game day in the kitchen?

I asked the family what we should eat for a Red and Gold Superbowl Dinner.

“Chips and salsa!” suggested Eli.

“Lemon meringue pie with raspberry sauce,” said Ben.

Tony says he’s going to Gordo’s for a burrito — a Super, naturally, for the Super Bowl. And so it’s set: the kids and I can make the pie Saturday night, and then Sunday all we have to do is open the chips and salsa and take a half-time walk to the taqueria.

Go Niners!

Superbowl Sunday: The do-(almost)-nothing plan

As it turns out, our team is in the Superbowl.

Ok, not really our team, but the local team. In truth, we are not serious (American) football fans. We love a good athletic event as much as we love Downton Abbey or Phineas and Ferb. We  Ella and her dad  watch soccer, baseball, college basketball, more soccer, much of the weekend. But football doesn’t really grab us until the playoffs. Even so, the Superbowl is an Event we don’t miss: the day stops, we cook a whole lot food, and watch it all unfold.More
